Kiyomizu-dera temple above autumn maples in Kyoto
Kyoto, decided · Updated August 2026

Kyoto is empty.
You are standing
in the wrong
ten places.

62.79 million people visited Kyoto last year and nearly all of them queued in the same ten spots between 10am and 4pm. This site tells you which sights are worth it, what hour to be there, and which quieter temple 200 metres away is better anyway. Every page ends in a decision.

01

Kyoto or Osaka — where should you base yourself?

DEPENDS29 min apart · ¥580

Sleep in Kyoto if you are here for temples and have three days or more — day-tripping from Osaka costs you dawn and dusk, the only two hours that matter. Osaka wins on nightlife, food crawls and hotel price. Split two and two on four nights.

02

Kinkaku-ji vs Ginkaku-ji — if you only do one

DEPENDS¥500 each · opposite corners of the city

Kinkaku-ji is the photograph; Ginkaku-ji is the better hour. Gold leaf across a pond wins on spectacle and loses on everything else — you cannot go inside, and 40 minutes is the whole visit. Full breakdown by traveller type.

03

Nara or Uji — which day trip?

DEPENDS45 min vs 17 min from Kyoto

Nara for a first trip: a 15-metre bronze Buddha and 1,200 bowing deer, half a day, ¥760 by Kintetsu. Uji for matcha, the ¥10-coin temple and the Nintendo Museum — 17 minutes away, and outside Kyoto's lodging tax if you sleep there.

Where to stay
The bed decides
your whole trip

Staying inside Kyoto buys the two hours that make the city — Fushimi Inari before 7am, Gion after dark. Downtown near the Kamo River is the first-timer answer; Gion is atmosphere at a premium; the station area is where you save. Cherry blossom and late-November dates need booking six to nine months out, and availability evaporates long before the price does.
